Senatorii PSD Daniel Zamfir and PNL Daniel Fenechiu have declared on Digi24 that both parties want their own candidate for the presidential elections, following Mircea Geoană's revelation yesterday that Marcel Ciolacu and other leaders of PSD approached him "in his office to propose him to run for the Presidency of Romania." Daniel Zamfir stated that he had not heard of such a proposal within the party, especially since no discussion has taken place regarding the candidacy of the party's leader, let alone someone from outside. He added that if "Mircea Geoană wants to run, he should come to PSD." However, social democrats believe that Marcel Ciolacu should also enter the race for the presidency. In the same manner, Daniel Fenechiu said that PNL wants its own candidate, "who will be the president of Romania, and Nicolae Ciucă is the best option for the party," explaining that history shows that Romanians vote for the candidate of the right-wing, and the current leader of the party is "the best choice" and "will have the votes of liberal sympathizers and of good-hearted people," excluding the possibility of Mircea Geoană running. The two leaders of PSD and PNL, Daniel Zamfir and Daniel Fenechiu, were asked what they think about Mircea Geoană's statement and if it has been discussed within the parties and the coalition. Daniel Zamfir (PSD): "I do not know about this discussion. Neither do my colleagues. I have not heard of any discussions within the party's forums about Marcel Ciolacu visiting or planning to have a discussion with Mircea Geoană. This discussion (Mircea Geoană as a presidential candidate for PSD - n.red.) has not taken place. Nor has there been a discussion about Marcel Ciolacu running for the presidency. He has not announced that he will run for the presidency of Romania. We want this to happen because he is the leader of the party, the Prime Minister of the country, he has taken extremely good measures for the population, he has stabilized the economy. That's our vision. As for Mr. Geoană's candidacy, I do not think he can run outside of PSD. Sorin Grindeanu was right, if Mircea Geoană wants to run, he should come to PSD. It's something that needs to be done." Daniel Fenechiu (PNL): "PNL has clearly stated that we want to have the candidate who will be the president of Romania. The long history has shown that Romanians vote for the candidate of the right-wing. I believe that Nicolae Ciucă is the best option. PNL stands behind him. He has not declared that he will run, just like Ciolacu. Just like PSD supporters want their president to run, we also want it. We believe not only that he will be the future president, but that he will be a good president. Nicolae Ciucă is not doing well in the polls for a simple reason - he has not declared that he will run. As long as he has not been marketed and has not said "I will run", it is quite clear that he is being outshined by Geoană, Ciolacu, who are highly promoted by PSD, Simion, Șoșoacă and other characters who have expressed their intention to run. We should not forget, however, that there are rules in politics and a liberal sympathizer will vote for the liberal candidate. Mr. Ciucă, in addition to the PNL votes, will also have the votes of good-hearted people, who, when the party makes the announcement, will be able to get to know the man who has served an entire life in the army, the man who is extremely serious, conflict-free, but firm, the man who, when he made a promise, keeps it. I believe that Romania now needs a leader like Nicolae Ciucă.
