Liverpool looked set to start the 2026-27 season in the midst of a defensive injury crisis with Joe Gomez freshly injured, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni working to return from long-term layoffs with their return dates still not certain, and only a 35-year-old Virgil van Dijk seeming a lock to be ready for opening day. Rather out of nowhere it appears they have solved it by agreeing a season-long loan deal for Barcelona’s 27-year-old Uruguayan centre half Ronald Araújo with an option to make the move permanent should the club wish to do so at the end of the campaign. To say this is a shock of a deal would be a major understatement. Araújo was named captain at Barcelona earlier in the year following the departure of Marc-Andre ter Stegen. He played 38 games for the Catalan giants last season. He was not rumoured to be available. However, Araújo was informed he would not be a key starter by manager Hansi Flick when he returned for pre-season. That led to the player becoming unexpectedly available. Initial reports of the loan deal were broken by Fabrizio Romano before being confirmed on the Liverpool end by the likes

of The Times’ Paul Joyce. Reports from the Barcelona side added further details, including a non-mandatory purchase option for next summer. There are some concerns about the player’s disciplinary record, ability to stay focused across 90 minutes, and mental health issues that caused him to step away from football for a time last season but at his best Araújo starts for Barcelona and Uruguay, plus he fills an urgent need and in a pinch can even cover right back. Details of any loan fee and what the purchase option will cost should Liverpool trigger it are unclear, but Araújo is expected to say goodbye to his Barcelona teammates tomorrow and travel to Liverpool to finalize the deal, and given the Reds’ depth issues it rather feels as though an ideal solution has fallen into their lap. In Araújo they have a player good enough to start against Newcastle in two weeks while the purchase option gives them an easy out should Jacquet and Leoni end the season fit and looking like a viable first choice pairing moving forward. It may not solve all of Liverpool’s squad issues, but it does solve one of their biggest.
