UDMR President Kelemen Hunor announced on Monday that the Social Democrats and Liberals are "condemned" to remain together after the European Parliament elections on June 9th. The question is which European family will the independent "locomotive" of their joint list join," stated Hunor. He explained that coalitions are now a sophisticated practice in the political culture of Romania, as no one can win elections alone.
When asked if he believes that the Social Democrats and Liberals will remain together after June 9th, he answered affirmatively. "Yes, they are condemned to go together. Condemned by the situation and decisions made. There is no other way for either of them," stated the UDMR leader.
Regarding future electoral alliances, Hunor stated that it depends on voters and at this point, it seems that no party will have a majority after the parliamentary elections. "We do not change sides often. Who will we make an electoral alliance with? It does not depend on me. Romanians will choose on December 8th. I cannot choose anything else but what the citizens with voting rights choose. I would like it to be different, but it may not be possible. You cook what you find in the pantry, it's simple. If we go with what we see today, I do not know what will happen until December, then probably no party will have a majority. So, we will continue to form coalitions in Romania. The first step is to have balanced and proportional representation in Parliament, us, the UDMR, and then, of course, with the parties we can discuss with, negotiate, and are compatible to some extent," explained the UDMR leader.
He also mentioned that in Romania, the political culture of forming coalitions becomes more sophisticated because no one can win elections alone. "Sure, if the Social Democrats and Liberals cannot form a majority and want to govern together, they will seek allies. If they come to us, we know how to handle such a request, but we have to wait until December 8th. This is probably the closest scenario to today's reality, but the numbers today may not match the numbers on December 8th. So, I do not want to make a leap to December, it is almost impossible, but you can imagine that we will cook with what we find in the pantry. The important thing is to be at the table, not on the 'menu'," added the UDMR president.
